Adeyinka Grandson, the President of the YYF and former British Political Prisoner, believes that the Yoruba should support the establishment of a US military base in Nigeria for several reasons:
The U.S. maintains military bases in strategic locations worldwide to defend and promote economic growth and stability. A US military presence in Nigeria could offer similar advantages, creating opportunities for the Yoruba and enhancing our security.
Consider North Korea and South Korea, which share the same people, race, skin colour, and language. Despite these similarities, North Korea is allied with Russia and poses a threat to South Korea, an ally of the United States. To safeguard South Korea from North Korea, the US maintains a military base in South Korea.
Similarly, Saudi Arabia and Iran share the same people, race, skin colour, and religion of Islam. However, Iran's alliance with Russia threatens Saudi Arabia, which is a US ally. To protect Saudi Arabia from Iran, the US maintains a military presence in the country.
Japan and China also share the same race and skin colour. Yet, China's alliance with Russia poses a threat to Japan, an ally of the United States. Therefore, the US has a military base in Japan to defend it against potential aggression from China.
The Yoruba and Fulani share the same race and skin colour in Nigeria. However, the Fulani, allied with the English, posed a threat to the Yoruba. Therefore, advocating for a US military base in Nigeria would help counterbalance the support the Fulani receive from the English, thus safeguarding Yoruba interests. This call is rooted in historical dynamics, where English-backed Fulani dominance has marginalised the Yoruba nation in Nigeria since 1960.
The Fulani, backed by English support, imprisoned Awolowo in 1963. They also annulled the results of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, won by Abiola. Furthermore, with English support, the Fulani nearly thwarted Tinubu's chances in the 2023 presidential election. It is imperative for the Yoruba to collaborate with the US to offset the English support for the Fulani.
